Internal Data Management Capabilities in Solid Edge

Every base seat of Solid Edge gets access to internal data management capabilities. To turn on Solid Edge data management navigate to File -> Settings -> Options -> Manage. Once the “user Solid Edge data management” is selected you’ll receive more options along the Data Management tab on the Quick Access bar. This is a tool built into Solid Edge to capture properties, prevent part and file number duplication, fast searching, and where used searching.

Solid Edge data management has an index-based search called “Fast Search” which enables you to quickly filter and find design data. Please note that fast search needs to be installed on every machine where you want to view and search properties from your Solid Edge documents, as well as want to store your Solid Edge files.

Solid Edge Data Management Tabs

Vault Definition: Solid Edge data management uses standard windows indexing to store information about your files. Windows indexes all Solid Edge files in your vault locations. Windows uses indexing to extract content from files and build an index catalog to facilitate fast and effiecent searching. Note that indexing locations with large numbers of files can take a long time.

Document Naming Rule: This tab allows the desinger to be able to utilize a structures numbering scheme which can be defined using the Numbergenerator.dat file located in the Solid Edge Preferences folder.

    • For individual users you can have the NUmberGenerator.dat file ocated locally on your workstation
    • If you have a team of designers that should be utilizing the same naming structure, please make sure NumberGenerator.dat is located on a mapped network drive that everyone has permissions to access.

Life Cycle: Life cycle management allows you to add a status to parts and documents, but you can also limit which statuses will be available for your environment. For example, you can unselect Obsolete, In Review, and Baselined.

Diagnose the SE Data Management Configuration: Solid Edge also allows you to diagnose the data management configuration, this will validate that properties are registered correctly, the search location is specified, and other aspects of your configuration depending on what is defined.
